![]() You don’t have to write a paragraph to connect with the people in your life. One author and I had a discussion about my publishing dreams and religion at a writers conference (odd combination, I know), so Brandy Vallance wrote “Dream Big! God makes the impossible possible! Happy reading!” This is not something she’d write every time she signed a book, but it’s also not overly personal and long. If you chatted before a speaking engagement, you might mention that. If you met at a conference and talked about their writing, you might wish them good luck. If you know the person requesting your signature, it’s nice to get personal and write them a unique note. Is there a phrase or saying your characters use that you could add to your signature? What about a reoccurring theme or message? Getting Personal A Star Wars author might write “May the force be with you.”įor When Magic Calls I plan on writing something like “May your tale be filled with magic” because my collection explores what fairy tales would look like in modern day. That book is about magic and its effects on those who wield it, so the line works. Boroson wrote “For Caitlin – with magic better than any drug” when he signed my copy of The Girl with Ghost Eyes. When Andra Watkins signed my copy of To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriweather Lewis, she wrote “Enjoy this adventure!” That line works because her book is about an adventurer and features an adventure. It’s also why I recommend thinking about your signature before someone asks for it. This is something I enjoy as a reader and fan and is what I hope to do for my own books. Some people prefer to give and receive a bit more than the minimalist approach, so consider pulling a line or concept from your book and including it with your signature. This might help a reader remember the day they got your book signed and fills up a bit more of the signature page. Many best-selling authors use this method because of the number of books they have to sign and because they might not have a personal connection to the person receiving the signature.Īlong with the recipient’s name and yours, you might also include the date and/or location where you signed the book. If you don’t know what to write, keep it simple. This is the quick and easy method and a good fall back. Or if you like to doodle, you could provide a fast sketch next to your signature. If you have an elaborate signature like Johnny Worthen, this will make your signature stand out. You could simply write “to fan’s name” then provide your signature like Kevin Hearne. If you anticipate having to sign a lot of books or signing for people you don’t know, a minimalist approach might work better for you. Some authors go minimalist some fill the page. ![]() When you sign your book, you get to show a bit of your personality while giving a reader something special they can hold onto.
